Current Articles: NCSPA - North Carolina Ports Delivers Strong Finish To Calendar Year
January 2, 2025
Wilmington/ Morehead City, N.C. – Buoyed by recently-completed expansion projects, North Carolina Ports posted a strong finish to the 2024 calendar year, with notable highlights across all cargo verticals at both deep-water ports.

General cargo volume through the Port of Wilmington was 16% over budget forecasts year to date (through November) and up 11% over the same period last year. These volumes were primarily driven by commodities supporting U.S. infrastructure, construction and the automotive industry, such as lumber, cement and steel. Volume forecasts show this trend continuing through December and into early 2025.

Year to date through November, the Port of Morehead City’s breakbulk performance was up 18% over the prior year, largely driven by the import of project and specialized cargo supporting North Carolina manufacturing, clean energy production and locomotives.

In addition, grain programs collectively were up 31% over the prior year. The completion of a new warehouse in December will add much-needed capacity to support these expanding grain programs and the handling of agricultural products through Morehead City’s terminal.

“Infrastructure investments, such as the recently completed warehouse and berth improvements in Morehead City, have enabled our team to support the increased demand for our general cargo services,” said Brian E. Clark, Executive Director, North Carolina Ports. “A new 2025 general cargo plan is underway to identify future infrastructure investments needed to sustain this volume increase and to remain well diversified among cargo verticals.”

In November, NC Ports had a 14% increase in containerized cargo through the Port of Wilmington compared to the same month last year. Early forecasts for the month of December also indicate a year-over-year volume increase. The most recent container yard upgrade, which was completed in Q1 of FY25, brought more capacity online to handle increased volumes while maintaining best-in-class trucker turn times. Year to date, the Port of Wilmington is averaging 30 minutes for a dual turn and 20 minutes for a single turn.

Refrigerated container volume also came in strong for the month of November, finishing 11% over budget and 16% over last year’s performance. Phase 2 of the refrigerated container yard brought much-needed capacity online to accommodate increased reefer trade in the state of North Carolina, and a recently completed Reefer Service Area has allowed our team to handle these volumes more efficiently. The six canopy-covered service lanes and three empty wash stations, located directly next to the Port of Wilmington’s refrigerated container yard, has streamlined traffic patterns and staging for truck drivers while improving reefer turn times.

Intermodal rail also continues to be a bright spot with year-to-date volumes currently outpacing last year’s record-breaking performance.

“Several major multinational beneficial cargo owners have identified the value of the Port of Wilmington’s express rail products and have integrated them into their logistics planning to improve overall supply chain performance,” said Hans Bean, Chief Commercial Officer, North Carolina Ports. “Time-sensitive apparel and textiles, machinery, industrial products, spirits and beverages and furniture are all examples of commodities that benefit from Wilmington’s time-definite intermodal services.”

To support continued intermodal rail growth, particularly as more ocean carrier customers turn to the Port of Wilmington for its reliable and cost-effective services, NC Ports has broken ground on a new intermodal rail yard, which will increase capacity from 14,000 to 50,000 intermodal rail moves annually.
