Port Alert

New Orleans / Mississippi River

April 04, 2025

Notices

Good day,

Please note the below and attached received from our maritime Association.

Due to the anticipated rainfall in the basin over the next several days, the LMRFC has began sending out briefings on the anticipated rise of the Mississippi River. The first briefing can be found below.

We will continue to monitor the anticipated high water that is being forecasted and provide updates when available.  Please continue to monitor your email for updates.

It has been about 5 years since the last significant Mississippi River Flood and will resume providing a High Water briefing packages for this event.

Today's forecast included 48 hours of future rainfall with Cairo cresting at 51.0 ft on April 11th. We have one additional day of heavy rainfall in the 48-72 hour time frame that will be incorporated into tomorrow's forecast that will include storm total rainfall.

There is still uncertainty with the rainfall, flows and regulation that will happen to manage the rise on the river so could see additional changes over the next several days until all of the rain is on the ground.

The 16 day NAEFS forecast on the Mississippi shows slightly higher stages at Cairo with a 52.5 ft crest, but a much broader crest with stages above 50 ft for ~ 10 days. Even though we anticipate dryer conditions next week, we will have to monitor rainfall for the next couple weeks until stages begin to fall.

We will send out daily updates the next couple days until we reach stable forecast conditions at Cairo and the Lower Mississippi.
