Port Alert

New York / New Jersey

March 27, 2025

Notices

See attached letter from Sandy Hook Pilots – Revised draft restrictions for Sandy Hook Channel.

The south way transit via Sandy Hook Channel is restricted to 35’6” BW Maximum draft.

Vessels with draft over 35’6” BW can still transit to terminals locates in the southern part of the Arthur Kill Channel (like Buckeye Port Reading, Shell Sewaren, Buckeye Perth Amboy and KMI Perth Amboy). However,  will have to proceed north way, via Stapleton, increasing transit time and additional tow escort time.

For vessels with draft over 36’ BW, transit via north way must be discussed with Pilots, on a case-by-case basis, based on the heights of the tide.

See below the Revised channel restrictions during normal tidal and weather conditions:

Minimum depth in channel via south way 33’ @ MLW
Maximum allowed draft in channel via south way 35’6” BW
Maximum allowed air draft via south way 141’ @ MHW

Minimum depth in channel via north way 35’ @ MLW
Maximum allowed draft in channel via north way 37’ BW
Maximum allowed air draft via north way 133’ @ MHW
